Help paying for housing
Some help is open now. Some opens for only a few days. Here is what we know, in plain words. Always check the source before you apply.
The Housing Authority of New Orleans runs Section 8 and Project-Based Vouchers. A voucher helps pay your rent each month. Waitlists open for short windows, sometimes just 2 to 5 days.
Good for: fixed income, SSI, seniors 62+ (some lists give seniors first place).

The City's Office of Community Development keeps a map of buildings it helped pay for. These homes keep rent lower for a set number of years.
Good for: anyone looking for lower rent near work or family.
The City funds groups that fix up homes where the owner lives. This keeps older owners safe at home and keeps homes affordable.

Rule of thumb: with a housing voucher, most people pay about 30% of their monthly income toward rent. The voucher pays the rest to the landlord.
